Sound absorbing or soundproofing? Read this first

Two different jobs. This hexagon panel is a sound absorber / decorative acoustic tile — it takes the edge off reflections and flutter echo so a hard room sounds less harsh. What it is not is heavy-duty soundproofing: it won't stop your neighbor's TV or street noise passing through the wall. For maximum absorption (loudness, light bass), pair these with thicker acoustic foam; to block noise between rooms, you need a soundproofing kit. Most great rooms layer both. We'd rather you buy the right thing once than return the wrong one.

Technical reference — STC, NRC, and what a felt absorber does

Two acoustic numbers come up when people shop for wall panels:

• NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient): how much sound a material absorbs. Decorative PET felt typically sits around NRC 0.30–0.55 depending on thickness and the air gap behind it. For comparison, thick premium acoustic foam runs higher (roughly NRC 0.70–0.95) — that's the trade-off between "looks great on the wall" and "maximum absorption."
• STC (Sound Transmission Class): how much sound a full wall assembly blocks between rooms. STC describes the wall (studs, drywall, insulation), not a panel mounted on it — so no decorative panel, ours included, carries a meaningful STC rating.
